Jumu'ah Volunteers Needed for Brothers at Corrections Facilities
Assalamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.
As you know there are several brothers within our Corrections facilities who have permission to attend Jumu'ah prayers at the masjid. This is of benefit, firstly as it allows our brothers to come to the masjid for Jumu'ah but also because it allows them to connect with the rest of the community. It is our collective responsibility to help our Brothers in this way. We have already received a request to bring brothers from Joyceville Institution from Imam Ali Islam and Imam Abdullah El-Asmar. Now we have received a request from Rev. Sharon Dunlop, part-time chaplain at the Collins Bay Minimum site as there are an additional 8 Brothers who have permission to attend Jumu'ah prayers at the masjid. Previously, there were two drivers to take these brothers, but currently there are no drivers. Please note that for those who are up for parole, attendance at a religious service outside the institution will assist favourably in consideration of his release.
We realize that not everyone has the flexibility in time to make a committment to drive. However, for those of you who have some flexibility in time, please consider volunteering, if not every week at least as part of a rotation. The more volunteers we have, the lower the burden on each. For those who may already have security clearance, please consider coming back to drive, even if you can only commit to one day a month. Collins Bay is only a 10-15 min drive to the masjid and within the city limits. Joyceville is a bit further but within 20-30 minutes, even closer if you are on the East side.
If you are self-employed, are a graduate student, have flexibile hours, please consider helping these brothers. If no one does, we as a community have failed in fulfilling our obligation to our Brothers in Islam.
Imam Abdullah El-Asmar (firstname.lastname@example.org),
Imam Ali Islam (Islam.Ali@csc-scc.gc.ca) or
Sr. Mona Rahman (email@example.com) if you can volunteer.
